How to Get Runway-Ready Skin for Fashion WeekSkincare Tips from Celebrity Makeup Artist Beau Nelson

Models walking the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW) runway know that the backstage routine is a barrage of rushing and pampering. Running from one show to the next, washing off one makeup look to prep for another…skin takes a beating. As a preferred skincare partner at MBFW’s Spring 2015 Collections, SK-II understands the challenges models face in maintaining beautiful skin under such a frenetic pace. Time may not allow for indulgent skincare backstage, but makeup artists have developed techniques to quickly and healthfully rejuvenate skin and keep it looking fresh for the runway.

Beauty Unearthed talked to Beau Nelson, a celebrated makeup artist for stars like Nicole Richie, Jessica Alba and Christina Hendricks, who’s had his fair share of time backstage. We asked him how he prepares models’ skin and how we at home can learn from his trade secrets to uncover our own most radiant, runway-ready skin.

Q: If there were only one thing you could do to prep a model’s skin for MBFW, what would it be?

A: SK-II Facial Treatment Masks. Nothing helps tired eyes and dehydrated skin more than these. I keep them in the fridge or on ice for an extra cooling effect. Not only do they help plump and hydrate skin, but they make the models feel great. Ten minutes with these on and the whole world is a better place.

Q: In an ideal world (i.e. if you had endless time backstage), how would you prep a model’s skin before applying her runway makeup?

A: I would definitely apply a full face SK-II Mask, followed by the SK-II Eye Mask. After that, I’d massage the face for 10 minutes with the excess product from the mask, making sure to massage the décolletage, as well as the face, and even the scalp. This stimulates blood flow, relaxes the girls, and makes the skin look extremely radiant and fresh.

Q: What are your tips for creating a radiant glow on models’ skin before they walk the runway? What are some products that can help, skincare and makeup included?

A: Besides the masks, the Cellumination AuraBright is an absolute must in my MBFW and red carpet makeup kit. Nothing creates a dewy glow faster than this product, and it’s perfect for under foundation. Once I’m finished with the foundation and powder, I like to put my SK-II Facial Treatment Essence into a spray bottle with a very fine misting applicator, and spritz this magic potion over the skin to set the makeup, melt the powder and leave the skin looking like skin again and not so “made up.”

Q: How can we re-create that soft, glowing, pore-less complexion we see on all the models at MBFW at home?

A: It all starts with skincare. The best way to recreate perfect skin is to have as close to perfect skin as you can, and taking care of your face is the best way to do that. I start by using the appropriate skincare for the skin type, plus the SK-II Cellumination AuraBright. I then apply a very sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer to the skin. The key is to use product only where needed and add coverage where necessary. The more real skin that shows, the more naturally perfect you will look.

Q: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned about skin in your experiences prepping models for the runway, and how can we all learn from that at home?

A: No one has PERFECT skin! We all think models are perfect, but it’s simply not true. The fact is, models have armies of makeup and hair people to make them look that way and access to the best skincare and dermatologists in the world! Models take care of their skin religiously and often and will even bring their own skincare products to set. The one thing you can take away from that is that once you find what works for you, stick to it, at least for six months at a time. That way your skin can receive the full benefit versus the opposite effect, which might come from trying something new too often.

Q: What’s the best beauty tip you’ve ever received about skincare that you can pass onto us?

A: Without a doubt, the best beauty tip I’ve ever received and could ever give, is the religious use of SPF. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, does more damage to the skin than the sun (except smoking… YUCK)! With the proper skincare regimen and use of SPF, you can stop aging in its tracks and have beautiful, healthy skin for life.
